PhD Position on Automation in Remanufacturing and Demanufacturing

The research group on Life Cycle Engineering of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) has built up significant experience with the optimization of the demanufacturing, in other words the breaking down and sorting of products into their components or composing materials in support of all possible combinations of reuse and/or recycling, of Waste of Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). It is the ambition of the research group on Life Cycle Engineering to expand their research activities and develop new product and process designs facilitating the demanufacturing of future generations of WEEE in close cooperation with both original equipment manufacturers and recycling companies to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.


You are part of a research group working on the topic of Life Cycle Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Jef Peeters, Prof. Joost Duflou and Prof. Wim Dewulf.

You independently follow-up literature, patents, company releases, conferences, etc. and use the obtained information to setup a design of experiments.

You are responsible for performing practical experiments for the mechanical separation of materials and automated demanufacturing of WEEE, for which you can make use of the advanced laboratories of the Department of mechanical Engineering and will be supported by lab technicians.

You contribute to the writing of project proposals and the guiding of Master students with their thesis work.

You report to your supervisors and to Industrial partners during project meetings and on international conferences.

You act as a coach and scientific mentor for junior colleagues.

You work on the writing of a PhD dissertation (Optional).


You have a PhD and/or Master in Engineering Science or Engineering Technology and like to combine a hands- on approach in designing experimental set-up and excellent research skills.

You like to consider the broader picture and to perform lifecycle costing and environmental analysis as part of the design process.

You like to work in a multidisciplinary team of international researchers and show willingness to learn/explore innovative technologies and techniques.

You have knowledge on both machining/production processes and automation/robotics.

You have a creative mind set and aren’t afraid to take initiative to look for innovative ideas and new opportunities.

You are fluent in Dutch and English or willing to improve your language skills.
